Picture Frames Within a Picture Frame

Did that just blow your mind? Probably not, but hopefully it at least piqued your interest enough to at least see where this thing is going. Don't worry baby birds, I'll feed you.

I've come up with a bunch of uses for old windows that I've been collecting. So far, I've only been able to bring just two of those ideas to fruition. Simple concepts, but they served their purpose at the time.

There are so many more things I want to try out with windows, and hopefully I'll get there, you know, eventually. Here's one more to add to the window tag.

Not sure where I got the inspiration, but I want to say it was Funky Junk Interiors? Had to be. I think a ton of her projects are totally boss, and more than a few of them have inspired some of my ideas.

Taking a very old window that was in pretty rough shape, I carefully removed the glass panes and the grills. If you care to know (and you probably don't), grills are the cross bars that create the grid on the window and hold the glass panes in place.

In any case, the grills on this window were completely rotten and not able to be reattached or salvaged in any way. They were toast. Otherwise, I would've kept them and figured out a different somethin' somethin' to make with it.

Once I distressed, chipped and scraped the existing paint a little bit more, it was pretty smooth sailing. I took simple twine that you can get at just about any big box store, and wrapped it around the entire frame over and over again, at different angles to create a random design. With each pass around, I pulled it tight and used a stable gun to secure it (always on the back side).

Then I finished it off by wrapping the old window handle with the twine too, and applied the combo Minwax stain/polyurethane.

As far as what YOU use it for, what am I, your mom? Could be a lot of things, I think. On its own, as a wall decoration? Sure. Use clothespins to hang photos, like the shutter I recently posted? I don't see why not. But what I chose to do was actually hang picture frames (with or without photos in them) to create some more depth and detail. Boom.
